Niceties

By Lydia Royce

Niceties

Be nice.
Do not say this,
Do not say that.
Do not raise your voice,
Or utter a word,
In the face of all that is going haywire.

Hold your silence.
Be nice.
All is spic and span.
Squeaky clean.
With worms crawling underneath.

Perhaps the stones will speak.
Perhaps the dead can come alive.
Seeing the niceness around us,
That buries all wrong.

All of us busy being nice,
Ensuring that nothing is expressed wrongly,
To uncover the evil,
And the stench,
Coming out of the rottenness,
Of our Niceness.

So
For Love’s sake –
Scream out the wrong.
And
Let’s not be nice.
