The Hem, The Hand, The Call

By Lydia Royce

The Hem, The Hand, The Call

“I will be made whole,”

She said,

“If only I touched

The hem of His garment.”

“My daughter will be well,”

He said,

“If only you’d come

And lay your hands on her.”

“My brother would be alive”

They said,

“If only you were here.

He would not have died.”

His hem

His hand

His call

Made them

Whole and

Well and

Alive

The longing

The heart-need

The desire.

To be whole,

When memories of memories

Vivid images of betrayals

Rise in the dreams.

To be well,

When exhaustion

And despair

Cause tangible pain.

To be alive,

When dreams die

When hopes crush

And it seems like the end

The hem

The hand

The call

Make all things

Whole –

Restoring

What was lost

Building strong walls

Well –

Raising me slowly

From the ashes

Wiping away pain

Alive –

Infusing a wave

Of new life

Into dead bones

His hem

His hand

His call

Are making me

Whole and

Well and

Alive
